Lower School (GRADES K-5)    

There is a tremendous joy and sense of achievement among BWL students in Kindergarten through Grade Five. The Lower School curriculum cultivates essential skills and kindles the process of learning. This has made the Lower School a renowned setting for the nurturing yet rigorous education at the heart of BWL's mission.

Determined to retain small class sizes and to pay close attention to the specific abilities of each child, teachers in the Lower School ensure that students' early experiences guide them toward the love of learning. Teachers tailor small ability-based math and reading groups to match the learning styles of every student in the Lower School.

Inspirational Lower School academics and extensive extracurricular activities support students' growth and encourage open-mindedness. Age-appropriate approaches to every discipline evolve as students discover the wonders of language, the arts, mathematics, the sciences, history and physical fitness. Additional subjects are required as the students progress through the division, with French, swimming and instrumental instruction beginning in Grade Four. All Lower School students visit the library where they enhance their skills of research and fuel their excitement for reading. A hands-on approach to science classes intrigues and engages students in Kindergarten through Grade Five.

Early on in the Lower School, students are supervised in the utilization of traditional and emerging technologies for information and research. In addition to weekly computer science classes that familiarize the students with processes, their proficiency in all subjects and classes is enhanced through the use of technology. Keyboarding, word processing, and Internet usage become part of regular and responsible routine.The BWL arts program is designed to develop a passion for creative expression, either through painting, drawing, singing, dancing or acting.
