College Guidance

BWL students are remarkably well prepared for success after graduation, as a result of both personal drive and the School's committed College Guidance department. Birch Wathen Lenox is wholeheartedly dedicated to recognizing the strengths of each student early on, and to giving all students the resources and support they need to pursue admission to the four- year colleges or universities that best match their academic and personal profiles.

Our thorough and comprehensive College Guidance Program begins in the early stages of Upper School with gatherings and special events designed to acquaint freshmen, sophomores, and juniors and their families with the college-application process. These meetings, both individual and group, along with visits from various college representatives, allow students and parents to benefit from presentations and question-answer sessions.

In autumn of their junior year, students take the PSAT and receive their results during a one-on-one appointment with a College Counselor. In this meeting, they also discuss the current and future status of their academic transcripts. Junior Seminar is taught during the spring semester of junior year. In this class which meets once a week, students are introduced to tools and strategies that aid their college searches. Important topics such as interviewing, college visiting and essay-writing receive special attention throughout the year. Held in early spring, Junior College Night enables students to hear first-hand accounts of the college application process from Directors of Admissions.

During the months of September, October and November, representatives from over 50 colleges and universities visit Birch Wathen Lenox to meet with interested students. Birch Wathen Lenox is also a member of a 10-school consortium that holds the annual Manhattan College Fair, which is attended by representatives from over 130 colleges and universities who meet students and respond to their inquiries. By staying connected with alumni, the College Guidance department continues to ensure an up- to-date understanding of the continually changing, competitive nature of college admissions. Birch Wathen Lenox is enormously proud of its resources for College Guidance. We praise our remarkable students whom we assist in earning their places at selective colleges and universities upon graduation from BWL.
